IMPROVEMENTS IN ELEVATING JOINT BRACKETS AND ELEVATING SCREW HEADS IN MACHINE GUNS
MUNITIONS DESIGN COMMITTEE SMALL ARMS SECTION. Minute (S)33, 18 March 1916.
Lieut. A. M. Bellingham, Middlesex Regiment, submits his invention and model thereof to D. of A. 22.10.15.
The invention consists in forming the elvating joint bracket as a depending socket with flared mouth for receiving the boss at the upper end of the elevating screw and providing means for engaging and retaining the boss in the socket, which forms a bearing for the boss to permit of the necessary rotary movement of the boss when elevating or depressing the gun.
In carrying out the invention the boss is preferably solid and shorter than usual in the axial direction, and may be provided with a tail piece or projection at right angles to assist in guiding the boss into position in the socket, the said tail piece entering a guide slot in the rear wall of the socket.
The socket is rectangular and converges from the open end or mouth inwards, its inner end being concave to form a bearing for the boss of the elevating screw.
In the side walls of the socket dovetail or other suitable guide grooves are formed for the reception of sliding catches, which project into the path of the boss and are adapted to be moved longitudinally as the boss enters the socket, preferably against the action of springs which return the catches when the boss is home and thus secure it in position in the socket.
The catches are conveniently formed on the legs of a U-shaped slide which projects from the socket and can be operated by hand to move the catches into or out of engagement with the boss.
The springs may be mounted on the ends of the U-shaped catch carrier or slide, which ends enter recesses bored to receive them in the walls of the socket. For adjusting the tension of the springs nuts are provided which bear against the outer ends of the springs, whilst the inner ends of the springs bear against shoulders formed at the ends of the bores in which the springs are housed.
For taking up the wear which may occur at the point of contact between the boss and the catches, detachable plates with retaining dowels or the like may be fitted on the catches.
By the use of this socket and catch, the screw can be put in position in less time than is taken with the present elevating bracket joint pin.
C.I.S.A. reports to D. of A., 28.10.15, that the invention is of no value owing to the variations which exist in the elevating bracket of guns at points which are at present of no consequences. It also fouls the chain on the elevating screw of the tripod. Its weight is 1¼ lbs. He recommends that no further action be taken.
The Experiemental Officer, School of Musketry, Hythe, reports 12.11.15. “In present form this device will not fit all guns, but if all guns could be so fitted there would be a considerable gain in speed and ease of mounting, and the loose elevating joint pin which is frequently lost could be dispensed with.
“The best way to fit the device would perhaps be to fasten it permanently to the bottom of the breech casing. No doubt such a change of pattern would be impossible at the present time, but it is thought that the idea might be developed on the lines indicated.”
Lieut. Bellingham called again, 19.2.16, on D.D.G.(S), and was informed that the invention could not be adopted without considerable trial, and that the present was not a suitable time to make any addition to machine guns, but that the matter might be gone into further at a later date.
Referred by D.D.G.(S) to Munitions Design Committee to note.
ACTION TAKEN:- Reported to D.D.G.M.D.(S). Noted by the Committee.
