Portugal

The Great War

Portugal was initially neutral during the Great War; however, in 1916, Germany declared war on Portugal and they became part of the Allies. They formed the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps and served as part of the British First Army. They were equipped with Vickers machine guns and Lewis automatic rifles by the British.

Within their divisions, they had dedicated machine gun units – along similar lines to the Machine Gun Corps – and their insignia was a crossed pair of Vickers machine guns.
