By 1916 Vickers machine guns with the infantry, cavalry and motors were routinely fitted with the Sangster Auxiliary tripod mounting so that they could be used if the Mark IV tripod was damaged or lost. It is a small mounting on a collar, with a forward collar so it could fold up in front.
It added extra weight to the gun but it kept is versatile, particular for forward guns moving ahead with an assault.
They did not survive beyond the First World War and only a few exist today, several of which you can see in the Exhibition.
