Flywheel Festival, 2017

The VMGCRA has provided displays of the Vickers MG in a historical context independently and as part of a wider group of individuals or associations. This page shows some of the photos and explains some of the context of the displays. Few of the photos are the property of the VMGCRA and where they are sourced from elsewhere, the link is shown below the photo to the original source and where, often, you can find more of the photos of the show. If a link is not shown, it means the original source cannot be located – if this is your photo, please contact using the link on the contents page.

Flywheel Festival, Bicester Heritage, Oxfordshire, UK (June, 2017)

Working with CHALK Living History, the Emma Gees displayed the equipment of the machine gun section of an Airlanding Battalion, as would have been loaded into a Horsa Glider for transporting to the Landing Zone.

The sections could be equipped with jeeps and lighweight trailers.  The intent of this display was to show how those jeeps and trailers were loaded into the glider and fixed into position to stop them moving in transit.  By using canvas and chalk, we were able to layout the internal dimensions of the Horsa, with rope showing the fixing chains.  This was supposed to simulate a period training aid for loading and unloading.

The layout was taken from the appropriate Air Publication sourced by the VMGCRA from the National Archives.
