A Machine Gun Company was attached to each Infantry Brigade and their subsequent Division. An additional Company was attached as a divisional reserve.
The 278th M.G. Coy. disembarked at Le Havre on 30 March 1918. It replaced the 265th Company and joined the 18th (Eastern) Division on 09 April 1918 and joined No. 18 Battalion, Machine Gun Corps as ‘D’ Company.
